Senior Citizen Defrauded for 31 Lakh by Bank Employee: Consumer Court Orders Bank to Compensate

A recent case of financial fraud has come to light, where a senior citizen was defrauded of a whopping 31 lakh rupees by a bank employee. The consumer court has taken cognizance of the matter and has passed a judgment in favour of the victim, ordering the bank to return the entire amount along with additional penalties.

The complaint case, registered as CC/15/2022, reveals that the bank employee, identified as opposite party No.1, and the bank itself, opposite party No.2, are held jointly and severally liable for the fraudulent activity. According to the court order, the bank is directed to pay 31,00,000 rupees to the victim, along with an annual interest rate of 7% on the amount of 13,00,000 rupees from 05.07.2019 and on the amount of 18,00,000 rupees from 20.04.2021 until the date of the complaint.

Additionally, the court has imposed a further interest rate of 9% per annum on the entire amount of 31,00,000 rupees from the date of the complaint until the realization of the payment. This ensures that the victim is compensated for the financial loss suffered due to the fraudulent activities of the bank employee.

Furthermore, the bank has been ordered to pay a sum of 20,945 rupees towards demand draft charges. This additional amount covers the expenses incurred by the victim during the legal proceedings. In addition, the bank has also been fined 50,000 rupees as a penalty for their role in the fraudulent incident and a sum of Rs.10,000/- towards litigation costs.

The consumer court’s decision highlights the importance of protecting the rights of senior citizens and holding financial institutions accountable for any wrongdoing. Such incidents not only cause financial distress but also erode the trust that customers place in banks and their employees.

Banks must maintain strict internal controls and conduct regular audits to prevent fraudulent activities. Additionally, employees should be trained and educated on ethical practices and the consequences of engaging in fraudulent behaviour. This will help ensure the integrity of the banking system and safeguard the interests of customers, especially vulnerable individuals such as senior citizens.

The consumer court’s ruling serves as a reminder that justice will prevail, and those responsible for defrauding innocent individuals will be held accountable. It is a step towards restoring faith in the banking system and providing a sense of security to customers.

In conclusion, the case of a senior citizen being defrauded for 31 lakh rupees by a bank employee highlights the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents. The consumer court’s order, which mandates the bank to compensate the victim and pay penalties, reinforces the importance of upholding the rights of customers and maintaining trust in the banking sector.
