Steps to Resolve Insurance Issues in India

When facing issues with insurance companies in India, it’s important to take the right steps to resolve the problem effectively. Here are the most effective steps to follow:

1. Register your complaint with the insurance company

The first step is to approach the insurance company directly to get your grievance addressed. You can contact the grievance redressal officer (GRO) of the insurance company by visiting the nearest branch or sending an email. Make sure to provide your complaint in writing along with necessary supporting documents and obtain a written acknowledgement with the date.[3]

2. Wait for the insurer to resolve the issue

As per IRDAI regulations, insurance companies should ideally resolve your concern within 15 days. However, if your grievance is not resolved within this time frame or if you are not satisfied with the resolution provided, you can escalate the issue to the next level – the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).[3]

3. Escalate the complaint to IRDAI

If the insurance company fails to resolve your complaint to your satisfaction, you can approach the Grievance Redressal Cell of the Consumer Affairs Department of IRDAI. You can do this by:

  • Calling the toll-free number 155255 or 1800 425 4732
  • Sending an email to complaints@irdai.gov.in
  • Using the online portal Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS) managed by IRDAI[3]

4. Send a letter to IRDAI with your complaint

If you are unable to use the online methods, you can send your complaint through courier or post to the following address:

General Manager
Consumer Affairs Department- Grievance Redressal Cell,
Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI),
Sy.No.115/1,Financial District, Nanakramguda,
Gachibowli, Hyderabad-500032[3]

5. Approach the Insurance Ombudsman

If your complaint is still not addressed to your satisfaction, you can approach the appellate authority or the Insurance Ombudsman. The Insurance Ombudsman scheme provides a cost-effective, efficient, and impartial way to settle complaints out of the court system. However, there are certain conditions to be met before approaching the Ombudsman, such as first approaching the insurance company with the complaint and the claim value not exceeding Rs 30 lakh.[3]

By following these steps and providing all necessary documentation, you can effectively resolve insurance issues in India. Remember to maintain records of all communication with the insurance company and escalate the complaint to higher authorities if needed.
