Cyber Fraud: Steps to take for recovering

If you’ve become a victim of cyber fraud (such as unauthorized transactions, phishing, identity theft, UPI fraud, etc.), act quickly and follow these steps:

Immediate Actions (First 30 minutes)

1. Call Your Bank/Wallet Customer Care Immediately

  • Block your card/UPI/account to prevent further transactions.
  • Ask them to register a fraud complaint/ticket and note the complaint ID.

2. Report to Cybercrime Portal

Go to: https://cybercrime.gov.in/

  • Click “File a Complaint” > “Report Other Cyber Crime”
  • Choose “Financial Fraud” and submit full details (screenshots, account numbers, etc.)

⚠️ Important: You can also call Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 (National Helpline)

📄 Documentation and Evidence

Keep the following ready:

  • Screenshots of the fraud messages/transactions
  • Bank statement of the fraudulent transaction
  • Any emails or numbers used by the fraudster
  • Your ID proof (Aadhaar/PAN)

🏦 File a Complaint with Your Bank in Writing

Submit a written complaint (email or letter) to your bank branch or customer care, mentioning:

  • Time and date of the fraud
  • Mode (UPI, Netbanking, etc.)
  • Request to reverse the transaction

RBI guidelines (under Digital Payment Security Controls) mandate banks to resolve such issues within 90 days.

🚨 File an FIR (If Amount is Large or Identity is Stolen)

  • Visit your nearest police station or cybercrime cell
  • Carry a printed copy of the cybercrime.gov.in complaint
  • File a formal FIR under IPC sections (eg., 420 for cheating, 66C, 66D of IT Act)

🔒 Secure Your Devices and Accounts

  • Change passwords for email, banking, UPI apps (Google Pay, PhonePe, etc.)
  • Enable 2-factor authentication (2FA)
  • Run antivirus/malware scan

💡 Tips

  • Don’t delete fraud messages/calls; they are proof.
  • Never share OTPs or card details again.
  • Use Truecaller or similar to flag/report spam numbers.
